LG KS360 - a Nominee of Global Mobile Awards 2009

LG KS360 is one of the Nominees of Global Mobile Awards 2009 [Link] (the other four are Nokia E71, T-Mobile G1, INQ1, BlackBerry Storm 950). Let us examine how does this cute phone gets its nomination.

For technology chasers this "Ultimate Chatter Box" won't be your dream phone, not even close, and we'd say this is a bit feminine with the cute round shaped design. It'll be a great addition for your girlfriend, especially if she tend to "accidentally" lost a phone when she see another dream phone. The phone tracing function will SMS the number of the new SIM card inserted to your phone, so you can contact the one who pick/stole(/bought) the phone.

Sure there is no cutting edge technology, with its limited specification of EDGE 2.75G connection, 2 megapixel camera, and 2.4" screen, this is very basic comparing with other competitors. But it's probably one of the cheapest full QWERTY phone around (150€). Even though it does not have touchscreen (except as dialpad, strange), QWERTY keyboard alone is additive if you need to send emails, albeit the keyboard is a bit too small for men.

What OS to install in your netbook?

What OS to install in your netbook?
Typically, the popular OS pre-loaded in a netbook is either Windows (XP/Vista) or Linux. However, with more and more users dedicated to mod their new toy, thhere has been a wider range of selection.
Mac OS XA couple of months ago, MSI Wind U100 was reported to be capable to install Mac OS X. Ever since then, experiments for other netbooks were carried out, with different angle of success - some can't use webcam, and some with bluetooth disabled.
Windows 7Windows 7, which supposedly is the new flagship of Windows family, is another viable solution. The user experience is less difficult than Vista. The trial download period of Windows 7 has expired, so users might as well find alternative methodss by yourself.
Please note that these version are unsuitable for SSD laptops due to large harddisk space required by the OS.

LG Prada II (KF900) and Prada Link

LG Prada II (KF900) is the sequel of LG Prada, one of the first fashion branded phones.

Specs:
Screen: 3", resolution 400x240
Input: QWERTY Keyboard
Camera: 5.0 Megapixel (2560x1920), video 30fps 720x480

Similar to KC910, with tabbed menu and widgets, no new additions. A nice collection of background pictures pre-loaded in the phone memory, plus the brand printed on the phone body (like the previous PRADA) - if you are a fan of the brand, PRADA 2 is made for you.

There is an optional accessory called "Prada Link", which is a watch capable of displaying the phone's status - calls, SMS, battery, reject call etc. Wearing it = "I'm rich".

Bonus: The background can actually be downloaded online (http://www.pradaphonebylg.com), and since the pictures are 400x240, your Viewty or Renoir can also use these background.

The 2009 HTC Touch Cruise, yes - same name different models.

Touch, Touch HD, Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Touch 3G, Touch Viva, Touch Dual, Touch Cruise. Won't it be a headache if you are in search of "HTC Touch"? When you search it in Google, all sorts of other models pop up. Now, the problem persists with HTC Touch Cruise (Touch Cruise a.k.a. Iolite).

THEY ARE REPEATING EXACTLY THE SAME NAME, "TOUCH CRUISE", AS THE OLD MODEL. This will certainly wreck havoc to users searching for this model, and to the bidders in ebay too. We really hope that HTC can name their products in a more user-friendly way.

Basic specs:
CPU: Qualcomm MSM 7225 528MHz Processor
Memory: 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM
Screen: 2.8" 320x240
Camera: 3.2 megapixel camera
Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, GPS (AGPS), UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA, wi-fi 802.11 b/g
Dimensions: 102 x 54 x 14.5 mm
Miscellaneous: MicroSD slot, USB 2.0 port, Radio
OS: Windows Mobile 6.1
Nothing really special. Nothing.

Software features:
With HTC TouchFLO, a streamline user-friendly appli... Okay, not with that crap. We all know TouchFLO significantly slow down the machine.

Footprints function is described as the innovative feature which enables you to record the geographical location when taking pictures... Wait, you say older models can also do this with really simple registry hack? Yes we know. This one is slightly different - you can record the location even when you're indoor. Sadly, it is expected that if you disable TouchFLO, you won't be able to access to this function at all.

Other than that, no other features. With mediocre hardware and limited features (vs Pro/HD), poor outlook (vs Diamond) and high price (vs Viva, 3G), we highly doubt that the phone will be sucessful.

BenQ C1060 Camera Review Cheap Digital Camera

This camera is dirt cheap. Since its launch in October, it's been selling at below HK$600, which is below €60. You can't expect more for this price though. The photo quality is good, and it can take better pictures than the counterparts of certain larger brands at higher ISO.

For this low price, there are obviously some weak points. Firstly, the minimum focus distance is around 10cm, most brands are doing 3cm or closer, so you cant take any clear close-up of your favorite stamps or coins. Secondly, C1060's response is not as fast as other brands which are selling for €300, but it's definitely a lot faster than camera phones though. Thirdly, you might have to consider bringing extra batteries with this, as this camera drains the battery quickly if you turn on the flash, but if you don't use flash often, the battery life is acceptable.

One more thing, If you see some random C1060 selling at €100 on ebay, don't get ripped off. We will do cheaper.

Pros:
- nice grip
- operates with AA batteries
- very cheap
- reliable anti-shake
- accurate ISO determination

Cons:
- bad distance restriction for macro lens
- battery life
- saving speed

Disabling the ActiveSync (for Omnia, Touch HD, Diamond, Motosurf, Xperia, O2, Glofiish or whatever that uses Windows mobile)

ActiveSync is the incredibly annoying function for connecting your PocketPC/Smartphone to your Windows computer. Since you are unlikely to synchonize every time when you use your computer or phone, you might want to disable the annoying auto-on functions.

Disable the ActiveSync in Windows
Sometimes you only want to charge your Windows Mobile/PocketPC with the USB cable, but the ActiveSync keep waking your handheld machine. Annoying. To stop this:
- Open The ActiveSync
- File->Connection Settings
- Disable "Allow USB connections"
Voila.

Disable the ActiveSync in your PocketPC/Windows Mobile
This is more tricky, and needed to hack the system registry. We recommend Fdcsoft Task Manager or DinarSoft MemMaid.

- install the software you've chosen.
- go to Notification Queue
- Delete the AppRunafterDeleteTimeChange with "repllog.exe"
- reset the machine

Warning: Don't delete the appRunatRs232Detect repllog.exe otherwise you might be unable to sync your machine at all!

Make mp3 ringtone for iPhone without installing software

We introduce you a method of making a ringtone with your computer, without installing any software.

  1. go to a site capable of making ringtone online, in this case, www.MakeOwnRingtone.com
  2. click "Upload" to upload your own mp3
  3. trim the part of mp3 needed
  4. select .m4r as the output
  5. press "Make a Ringtone"
  6. Save the .m4r file and open it, so it will synchonize when you open iTune

for phones other than iPhone 2G/iPhone 3G, it's even easier - just save the trimmed file as mp3 and send to the phone.

One year ago, Philips Xenium 9@9j was announced as the revolutionary mobile phone capable of using AAA batteries. It is now officially Philips Xenium X520.

We have no news on the release of this phone in Europe, but it is already available in Asia. Up to this date, Xenium X520 should be available on ebay for around €200 (remember the shipping costs).

Samsung PIXON M8800 or LG KC910 Renoir?

There has been comparison on Samsung Pixon M8800 (M8800H) and LG KC910 Renoir recently. Here we provide a really simple comparision for your convenience.

What Renoir features but Pixon lacks:
  • wi-fi
  • front camera for video call (CMOS 0.3 megapixel)
  • Xenon flashlight (Pixon uses LED flash)
  • ISO 1600
  • 120 fps video
What Pixon features but Renoir lacks:
  • 720 x 480 video (Renoir is 640 x 480)
  • 16x digital zoom
  • 200 MB internal memory (100 MB for Renoir)
  • a larger screen (3.2" for Pixon, 3.0" for Renoir)
As of 14 January 2009, Renoir sells for $440 and Pixon sells for $490 here. Seems Renoir wins in many ways but the screen size and outlook. It is still not clear that the Renoir will have the versatile customization ability like its precedator KU990 Viewty, but all in all, we believe that Renoir has some edge on the competition.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Symbian S60

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (5800xm) is based on the Symbian S60 5th Edition system.

As 5800 xm is a S60 phone, so you can:
- tap *#92702689# to check if the phone is a new one.

- tap *#7370# to perform a master reset (default password: 12345).

- Go to Handango, Nokia Software Market, or SymbianGear to buy applications.

Talk volume issue: If you found the volume of the 5800xm unstable, it might be not related to software or reception - it's the hardware that caused the problem! To solve it you have to dissemble the phone and fasten the hardware. It is recommended that you go to Nokia for the dirty work, or demand for a replacement if necessary.

Verizon Samsung Omnia Low Battery Beep Issue

We have recently received a question from an US reader on his Samsung Omnia beeping in silent mode. So far only Verizon's version has been reported having the issue of beeping every five minutes of "low battery" in any mode, including silent mode. We have heard no case for other carrier's (Europe, Asia etc) on similar problems. If you are using a non-Verizon Omnia and still have this problem, please leave a comment below and we will follow up.

Verizon users can attempt to modify the system registry at your own risk. The file in concern and in irritation is called "phonelowbatt.wav", you can try to do something on it. For example, change or add the value of the following registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\phonelowbatt]

Change or add the value Sound to a .wav file with no sound, or to an invalid file.

Alternately, user might attempt to replace phonelowbatt.wav with another file, if possible.

Update: Some reader pointed out that certain version of Omnia can change the low battery sound directly in option (Settings -> Personal -> Sound and Notification), you can change to a blank quiet.wav, and you can disable it, depends on model.

If you don't see it, go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\{A877D663-239C-47a7-9304-0D347F580408}\
Add a stringvalue with valuename: "Default" and valuedate "lowbatterywarning"
try the above again.

Users are encouraged to leave their feedback or question on this page. There are useful information in the comment of this article, please refer to it. Thanks to the anonymous contributor!

Battery life for HTC Touch Diamond P3700 and Extended Battery

Battery life for HTC Touch Diamond P3700 and Extended Battery

HTC Touch Diamond ("P3700") is a great phone with multimedia functions, but we've heard that most users are complaining the very short battery life of the handset. Even if you switch off GPS, Wi-fi and Bluetooth, it's hard to sustain the battery for one day.

The original battery is 900mAh, which usually lasts for less than your daily usage. If you decide not to charge your Diamond in office, it seems inevitable to acquire an additional battery for your normal usage. You can find in the market some types of replacement batteries to beef up Diamond's battery life.

1. The original extended battery, model "BP E270", features a larger size 1350mAh battery. This still comes with a thick back, but it's more elegant though. Warning: High price.

2. "Big" batteries. With capacity ranging from 1530mAh to 2000mAh, so physically big that the original back cannot be covered, and the dealer will include a rather bulky back along with the battery. This new back does not look as good as the original one, of course. The extended battery will affect reception of GPS due to its size. Don't believe words like "works like original".

Besides these two, you can always buy the 900mAh batteries. This is not recommended as you will soonly find yourself changing batteries several times a day.

Review on Philips GoGear LUXE 2GB SA24 (the red crystal one)

We have acquired the bluetooth headset of the Philips GoGear LUXE 2GB in red color(SA2420BT/97) (the white one is SA2422BT/97), and we have some feedback here.

The GoGear LUXE is packed in a plastic box and placed like a wristwatch. It is tricky when taking out the LUXE from the packet. When plugged into USB, the LUXE updates itself's ROM to 2.1.5 - and this version of ROM is not of a satisfactory stability as we tested though.

We have tested it with LG KU990 Viewty and HTC Touch Diamond for the bluetooth connectivity.

Pros:
- Exceptional reasonable voice quality.
- Excellent reception. Chat uninterrupted with obstacles and a closed wooden door.
- Nice design.
- Able to display multiple languages in the monocolored OLED screen.
- Very fast switch to radio/MP3 player after telephone call.
- Good radio reception.
- Reasonable battery life.

Cons:
- There is no stereo connection for bluetooth, just normal bluetooth connection.
- Have problem switching to phone call: The other party could hear us, but we can only hear music - probably a firmware issue.
- Difficult to use without reading the manual. Worse, there is no menu in the package, and no menu in the driver CD (this is absurd) - you have to connect the machine and read the PDF inside the machine!
- No backlight at the dark, entire display unreadable at night.
- Slow response with "Next" / "Prev" function, might make user press twice.
- Battery indicator are not easy to find. (Currently we only see the indicator when turning on the machine.

With the high price of the headset HK$690 (around US$89), we will give GoGear LUXE a 5 out of 10 for its price-performance ratio. This is surely a good bluetooth headset, probably better than iClip according to our call parties' feedback.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - Read before deciding to buy: http://geektechpost.blogspot.com/2009/02/review-update-bad-bugs-for-philips.html

Philips GoGear LUXE (SA24) - The perfect bluetooth headset for HTC Touch Diamond

We don't know why Philip regards LUXE as an MP3 player with bluetooth. With such a clip brooch design, we will definitely categorize LUXE as a bluetooth headset with an MP3 function.

Why do we say that LUXE is the headset for HTC Touch Diamond?

MP3 function - Battery drain for HTC Touch Diamond is pitiful, the battery of Diamond will go out earlier than most bluetooth headsets.

Design - Look at the picture, the crystal-like structure is so elegantly consistent with the outlook HTC Touch Diamond.

OLED display - Capable to display caller ID. Most popular Bluetooth headsets just plain don't do that. Don't expect it will project a flashlight in the diamond area. This Chinese site, ZOL, shows you where the display is.

Limitations:
Not friendly to navigate. You will find the device full of "features. To start with, a series of buttons might probably overwhelm you at the first glance: Volume up, volume down, fast forward, rewind, power/pairing. There is a knob for mode selection too. In addition to these, you will see the display screen, the microUSB port, the microphone hole and of course the earphone.

For the price of US$80, We wouldn't say it's prohibitive, but we do believe if there are competitors the price will go down quite easily.

SDXC, the Next-generation SD card announced in 2009 International CES

In the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) held in Las Vegas in 2009, the capacity of a SD card is expected to have a breakthrough. Typical SD cards only support up to 2GB, and the SDHC capacity has a cap of 32GB.

The new SHXC stands for "Secure Digital Extended Capacity" capable of supporting a maximum capacity of 2TB (= 2,000GB (in 1024 scale not 1000 scale)).

According to the report of Dennis Hissink in CES 2009 website, "SDXC is a large-capacity card that can store more than 4,000 RAW images, which is the uncompressed mode professionals use, and 17,000 of the fine-mode most consumers use. That capacity, combined with the exFAT file system, increases movie recording time and reduces starting time to improve photo-capturing opportunities," said Shigeto Kanda, general manager at Canon. "Improvements in interface speed allow further increases in continuous shooting speed and higher resolution movie recordings. As a memory card well suited to small-sized user-friendly digital cameras, the SDXC flash memory specification will help consumers realize the full potential of our cameras."

eee Phone (eeePhone) to be announced on March 2009

The Taiwanese computer manufactuerer ASUS had enjoyed tremendous success in the launch of eee PC (eeePC) in late 2007, and new products have been stylish and popular, from eee Box (eeeBox) to eee Top (eeeTop). It has been rumored that ASUS will be launching its eee series for PDA phones. We now have the news.

From tradition, ASUS has been producing PDA phones with Windows Mobile. This Open Handset Alliance member is expected to annonuce the rumored eeePhone (name not final), an Android-based cellphone really soon. Quoting Johnny Shih, the CEO of ASUS, there will be an "astonishing announcement" on March 2009.

ghs.google.com IP incompatible with certain domain providers and possible solutions.

If you host a blog online on BlogSpot with your own domain with certain providers, for example GoDaddy.com, you might encounter problems during setting up the IP record of A.

Sure, you can set your any subdomain as any CNAME redirecting to ghs.google.com, but you just cannot set it as the "@", giving you an error screen in the process that states that you must assign a valid IP address, not a domain name like ghs.google.com.

Following the tutorial of Blogspot help page, you should be able to set up "www.YourBlog.com" with ease.  Unfortunately, the case is very inconvenient and frustrating when you are attempting to host a blog in blogspot called "YourBlog.com".  It won't let you redirect to blogspot, and in fact, if you don't have a dedicated hosting with you, you might end up sending visitor of "YourBlog.com" to a blank page.

The problem can be temporarily evaded by directing typing in the IP address, for example: 72.14.207.121.  This will work for a short while but not permanently, but this should definitely help a bit.

UPDATE: afraid.org seems to be offering a solution for free, by providing an IP redirection service.  We will report more when we toy with it a bit later.

Any valid methods are welcome to share here.  Thanks!

Bug of Microsoft Spider Solitaire?

If you play Spider Solitaire often, you might be encountering it every now and then (OK, this is the "Beginner" difficulty). Now the question is, does it count towards win, dismal lose or just a dead-end that you cannot change?

Motorola "Motosurf" A3100 touch WM6.1 phone

Yet another full screen WM6.1 (Windows Mobile 6.1) touch phone. Boring. Wait, it's Motorola, and it's 3.5G WCDMA? By merely looking at the outlook, you will immediately realise it's not the crappy Q9 monstrosity.

We have sources that it is confirmed that Motosurf A3100 will be available on January 2009. Following the footsteps of HTC and friends, Sony Xperia X1, and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic etc, Motorola, unfortunately, falls amongst the slowest manufacturer to launch a full screen touch phone.

Let's have a look on its specifications.

A big boo for no crystal talk feature. However this feature caught our attention:

1 - Up to 6.8 hours of talk time - A WM phone cannot achieve that easily. Bravo if it's real.

2 - Oh, "Connect with friends and update your status with one-touch access to Facebook". Nice function the social butterflies (We will compare it with same program on Xperia and iPhone once we get the A3100.)

Other than these two functions, nothing too special. We expect it will be around US$550 or HK$4,380. Don't buy it above that price. Seriously.

The screen size is 2.8 inch, the same as HTC Touch Diamond, but it's the edge of A3100 that gives the impression that the screen is smaller.

We believe that there are lots of choices for similar specification as Motosurf A3100. It is recommended that you try as much possibilities as possible before deciding to buy which one. Youtube is your friend. :)

Samsung's New T*Omnia SCH-M490

Samsung Omnia i900 (also known as i908) enjoyed a big success in various countries for its endless functionality and innovative widgets. The large screen it features is very clear to use but unfortunately the resolution was capped at 400 x 240. This resolution is acceptable for normal usage on its 3.2 inches screen, but rather pitiful facing its nemesis - HTC WM cellphones. Take HTC Diamond for example, features VGA - that's 640 x 480.

Now Samsung has fought back with its new masterpiece, called "T*Omnia" (or M490). The new T*Omnia features several upgrades to the specifications, the most notably, eye-catching shenanigan is the screen resolution to 480 x 800, so you can watch a video with much higher quality.

T*Omnia's screen has only increased by 0.1 inch but interestingly the difference is not difficult to spot.

T*Omnia also features "Satellite DMB" - Digital Multimedia Broadcasting. So if you are in Korea you can watch TV on the road.

According to their press release, the notable upgrades are just the resolution, screen size, and "DMB". All these features contribute to a increase in size of phone to 115 x 58 x 14 mm. The size of Omnia suits quite perfectly for a male adult's palm, so (in my opinion) it's not quite female-friendly. The enlargement in size will surely makes T*Omnia less appeal to women.

Extend the Battery Life of Samsung F480 Tocco

Extending the Battery Life

Here are some recommendations to prolong your Tocco's battery life, but they're really common sense:
  • Disable flash-light when unnecessary
  • Disable operation beeps and vibration feedback
  • Set background light to a comfortable level.
  • Disable Bluetooth

Samsung F480 Tocco Quick Tips

Samsung F480 Tocco, or known as "Anycall" "F488" in certain Asian countries, is a 3.5G phone with fast response and nice outlook. Do you know some or all of the tips? Here are some of tips on using the phone.

Dialling
When dialling, tap and hold the final digit and you will not need to fill in any additional numbers. Handy if you dont want your hand off the screen.

Silent Camera
If your F480 (or F488) can't set the camera to silent, and you feel you need to take some photos silently, say in restaurant or in an expo, you might consider loading the phone with another ROM. Changing ROM is not difficult for Samsung mobiles and there are lots of coverage on the web. (Disclaimer: Improper use might void the warranty.)

Equiette

Its operating beeps is very irritating to passengers. To maintain proper equiette and reduce battery usage, it is recommended to set disable the beeps.

Face Detection
If you face difficulties when using face detection function, try asking the person in picture to remove their eyeglasses. This might sound really awkward and stupid, but most of the time it works.

LG KU990 Viewty Alarm Trick and other tips

Alarm Trick

Viewty has a very user friendly function of the anti-shake button. When the alarm sounds, you can double tap the anti-shake button to make a 5-minute snooze function.

Quite handy if you are lazy to open your eyes to stop the alarm, or if you don't have glasses on! Sleeping is the most important, after all!

Test Mode

Key in 3845#*990# in dialer pad. Contains modification of ringtones, tweaks on camera, etc. . .
May brick your phone if used properly. Use with extreme caution and at your own risk!!

Using a Micro SDHC Card (MicroSD card with memory greater than 2GB)

It is not possible to use a new MicroSD with capacity greater than 2GB. You will see 0 bytes available for the card memory. To solve this, do the followings:

  1. Format the MicroSD card with "FAT32" format. (Any card reader capable of reading this card) (In Windows XP: Locate the drive, right click and choose "Format")
  2. Fill the card with files (for example, your favorite MP3 songs and movies) until the free space is less than 2.0GB (in manufacturer's definition, i.e. 2,000,000,000 bytes, which means around 1.9GB in reality)
  3. Put the card into the phone and you should be able to use it.
Note that your phone will be slower with larger SD cards. 2GB is optimal, 4GB is okay, and 8GB will be a bit slow. 16GB is not recommended (and not tested by me).
